Flood

Floods are caused due to many reasons, heavy and prolonged rainfall, heavy molting of snow, and changes in the course of a river. A river in flood Last year, it rained heavily on the mountains. The level of water rose very high in the lake of Mangla Dam. The gates of the dam were abruptly opened to save the dam. This caused a great flood in the river Jhelum. All the towns and villages along the riverside were badly affected by the floodwater. Especially, the condition of the people of Jhelum city, Pind Dadan Khan, and Bhera was worst. The water came sweeping away everything that came in its way. It pulled down many houses and destroyed crops. Many men, women, and animals have been swept away. There was great panic everywhere. The people moved through flooded areas towards the nearby high areas of Salt Mountain. It was a terrible scene. I had the first glimpse of the river in flood. The entire area up to the far-off road, bridge, and even beyond was just one sheet of muddy water. We saw floating dead bodies of poor people and corpses of animals. Some people saved their lives by climbing up the trees. Our army saved many people from drowning and took them to a nearby safe place. Relief camps were opened. The government also helped the affected people. However, the loss was very great, and the help was insufficient. In Pakistan, floods cause greater damage than any other single disaster.
